Summary

Dr. Selara is an accomplished medical officer and surgeon. She strives to bring cheer and optimism to the world around here, both personally and professionally. Typical of her Denobulan culture, Selara joined Starfleet to explore the galaxy to “seek out new life and new civilizations”. Selara also has a passion for learning new ideas and concepts, and sharing them with others.

Appearance

Selara possesses the typical Denobulan facial ridges and expressive facial features. She also has their characteristic  cheerfulness and is quick with a smile or teasing comment. While on duty, she typically wears a blue medical coat over her Starfleet uniform. Selara will occasionally add small touches with colorful accessories and jewelry.

While off-duty, Selara dresses to the occasion. By default, she wears simple, utilitarian clothing with muted tones. She prefers her upbeat and cheerful attitude to be more noticeable than her clothing. Selara enjoys dressing up for special events, but seldom does so without being prompted.

Personality

Selara carries herself with the typical Denobulan cheerfulness and optimism. She finds this effective in defusing tension in a situation. Selara prides herself on her meticulous attention and ability to connect with people, on a professional and personal level. She uses this ability to lending a sympathetic ear to those facing difficult times.

History

Born in Denobula, Dr. Selara grew up surrounded by inherent scientific curiosity and exploration. After completing her medical training, Selara joined Starfleet. She admired the opportunity to expand her horizons and medical knowledge. Specializing in surgery led Selara to her first assignment as a medical officer aboard the medical frigate USS Aretaeus.

USS Aretaeus

The Olympic-class ship’s mandate was simple: Render medical aid during times of crisis and rebuilding.  The Dominion War had cast a long shadow, leaving some of the Federation’s colonies without help or hope. Selara found herself not only rising to meet this challenge but thriving in it. Whether it was treating injuries with minimal colony resources or working with colleagues during mass casualty events, Selara absorbed the experiences like a sponge.

One mission saw the Aretaeus assigned to evacuate a colonial world. The world was in the destructive path of a collapsing star. The ship managed to board all 3,400 colonists, but this came at a cost. The integrity of the star shifted, causing it to explode earlier than predicted.  The initial shockwave hit the Aretaeus, shearing into its hull. The Olympic-class ship was buffeted with shockwaves, each worse than the last. The escape pods were launched, some clearing before the ship erupted.

Days passed like years while Selara and the others in her pod drifted in space. Their distress beacon was answered by an Akira-class ship on a routine raider patrol. They managed to locate and retrieve all the available escape pods. A final headcount was done: 1,360 total survivors, 1,320 colonists, and 40 of the Aretaeus crew.

Starfleet Medical

Shaken by her experience aboard the Aretaeus, Selara requested an assignment at Starfleet Medical. She took a position as an instructor in the Surgical Services Department. It was there that she put her years of knowledge aboard the Aretaeus by educating others. Selara also found she had a passion for it. The years of teaching and regular visits with a Starfleet counselor allowed Selara the time to heal from the trauma on the USS Aretaeus. However, the stars are a tempting mistress that one can only ignore for so long.

USS Harlegand

During a semester break, Selara’s wanderlust started to get the better of her. She liked her instructor position, but always felt she belonged amongst the stars. Selara had received notice of an Assistant Chief Medical Officer position aboard the USS Harlegand. The Luna-class vessel was to set out on a seven-year mission in the Gamma Quadrant deep space. Not known for doing things in half measures, Selara quickly joined the crew.

The mission wasn’t nearly as exciting as the Aretaeus, but it satiated her thirst to learn about new cultures. She attended as many of the science briefings as she could. Selara also signed up for as many away missions as she could. The running joke in the Medical Department was that she spent more time off the ship than on it. After spending seven years in space, the Harlegand returned to Federation space with new scientific data.

USS Hathaway, USS Valkyrie to the Present

Reinvigorated her love for space travel by joining the Harlegand, Selara looked for other opportunities. The position of Chief Medical Officer was available on the USS Hathaway. Selara knew it was another opportunity for deep space exploration aboard a more advanced ship. Unbeknownst to her, the year Selara joined the ship would be its last in service. When a ship-wide power outage nearly cost the Captain his life, the ship limped back to the nearest starbase and was placed on hiatus.

The same year, Selara was chosen to be the Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Valkyrie. Like the Hathaway before, Selara served only a year before this ship, too, was put on hiatus. In her final mission serving aboard, the Valkyrie had fallen into a time bubble. Although The Department of Temporal Investigations kept things quiet, the ship was placed under hiatus pending investigation.

Not having further options for billets, Selara returned to Starfleet Medical as an adjunct instructor.
